23 APRIL 2017, JOHANNESBURG – The flame of excellence in the radio industry burned especially bright last night at the Sandton Convention Centre when the winners of the 2017 Liberty Radio Awards were announced. The Awards programme celebrates and acknowledges excellence in radio and brings the entire industry together for a night of celebration.
“Radio plays a critical role in the lives of almost 94% of all South Africans – it is their primary source of information and entertainment – sponsoring these awards enables us to contribute towards raising the standard of radio broadcasting, ultimately resulting in stations providing more compelling fare for their listeners,” says Sydney Mbhele, Chief Marketing Officer of Liberty. “This, in turn, leads to better dissemination of valuable knowledge that empowers listeners with vital information; we trust that building on the successes of the radio industry will help us on building on our successes as a society – which is one of Liberty’s core values.”
“I was particularly pleased with the number of entries that we received,” says Lance Rothschild, CEO of the Liberty Radio Awards. “Thanks to Liberty’s foresight in sponsoring the awards, radio stations and personalities have a platform to benchmark their performance and to strive to meet higher standards of excellence in their craft. The quality and depth of entries was remarkable and the adjudicators had a difficult time sorting out the best of the best, all of which bodes well for the future of radio.”
John Robbie, who hung up his headphones at 702 after a distinguished career spanning 30 years with the station, was presented with a Lifetime Achiever Award. Robbie’s career and his achievements paved the way for many broadcasters to follow and the Lifetime Achiever Award is a fitting tribute to his outstanding contribution to the radio industry.
